Wimbledon and Putney Commons Park
Wimbledon and Putney Commons Park is a 1,140-acre large open space in Wimbledon. It manages the three areas in southwest London which are Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common. The park is made up of beautiful woodlands, playing fields, a golf course and nine ponds. There is a lot of interesting things for families and children to see such as a wide variety of animals, birds and plants.
Playgrounds
Although there isn't a typical playground for kids, there are still many things they can enjoy in this park. The Windmill is one of the popular attractions of the park. It opened in 1976 and has its own history as well as the general history of windmills in the past. This windmill has now been turned into a museum which is open on weekends and on Bank holidays from March to October. On the first floor, children can have fun milling flour by themselves using traditional methods and there is a saddle stone, a mortar and a hand quern as well as a supply of grain provided for them. It is free entry and features exciting exhibits such as push-button models.
The Windmill Nature Trail is an adventure to go 800 metres around the park, following markers and directions and seeing the beautiful flora, fauna, trees and wildflowers and see a variety of birds nesting in the area. This trail is a great chance for children to learn a lot about nature and natural habitats. There is a guide you can purchase for £2 from the Ranger's Office that is full of information as well as identification tasks for children. This park is generally great for cycling with the kids or playing your own games such as ball games. Even bring your dogs for a walk here and have fun running around the grass and even climbing on the trees! There are events and activities that are held in this park every year such as Easter Egg hunts and many more!
Food & Drink
The Windmill Tearooms are located in the Windmill Car Park. It offers a variety of hot and cold dishes, drinks and delicious treats such as homemade cakes, tray bakes as well as their well-known bread pudding. There are lots of grassy spaces and fields so on a sunny day, you can use the opportunity to bring your own snacks and packed lunches and have a picnic with the kids.
